Ortega Ezquerro are a family winery with a unique personality, linked to Tudelilla (Rioja Baja). Carmelo Ortega, the current owner, continues the tradition started in 1896 by his great-grandfather, Don Quintín Ortega. The Ortega family has evolved with the times, maintaining a focus on quality and low production of their vineyards.
They consider the vineyards as the most important part, the beginning of everything. Tudelilla is characterized by its unique type of soil, pebbles similar to the galets found in Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe. This type of soil is only found in the village of Tudelilla. They practice environmentally friendly agriculture, although they are not organic. Currently, they are testing organic viticulture on one plot.
The harvest is 100% manual. They have 20 hectares of their own vineyard, aged between 40 and 80 years, producing around 70,000 bottles (3,500 kgs/Ha). In addition they control another 80 hectares, from which they select the best plots and grapes for the Ortega Ezquerro range. The rest is sold in bulk to prestigious wineries within the DOCa. Rioja.
Despite the size of Rioja, which has diverse climates, with different soils and winemaking approaches. Ortega Ezquerro are based on four pillars:
1. Tudelilla and its terrain: Stony soil, pebbles, known as the “Sea of Stones” of Tudelilla.
2. Altitude: Vineyards between 550 and 680 meters.
3. Garnacha: Although Tempranillo is their main grape, Tudelilla is known for its Garnachas, which are present in their wines in a considerable percentage.
4. People: Their team and their families are fundamental. They take care of the people and the Ortega Ezquerro team, who in turn take care of the grapes and the wines.
